Processing Strategies, Fluency, and Confidence in Artificial Grammar Learning

چکیده
According to episodic theories of implicit learning general knowledge of a domain is not directly stored in memory, but a result of the use of episodic representations. Such theories are consistent with effects of processing fluency on classification in implicit learning tasks. The experiments reported in this paper investigated whether masked priming influences classification in artificial grammar learning. The results showed no effect of masked priming under standard conditions (Experiment 1), but an effect when a response deadline was invoked (Experiment 2). In addition, the participants ́ confidence judgments showed different patterns depending on the presence of a response deadline. The results are consistent with unitary episodic theories of implicit learning according to which the nominal status of a task is no guarantee for the processes it triggers.

This study tested the impact of implicit and explicit knowledge of grammar on learners’ use of oral communication strategies (OCSs) and the interface of OCSs and oral fluency. The study was performed on 24 male and 36 female Iranian university students of English Translation studying at Payame Nour Universities of Lar, Khonj, and Evaz chosen based on availability and ease of access. The data we...
متن کاملRecollection, fluency, and the explicit/implicit distinction in artificial grammar learning.
In this article, the authors propose that both implicit memory and implicit learning phenomena can be explained by a common set of principles, in particular via participants' strategic use of recollective and fluency heuristics. In a series of experiments, it was demonstrated that manipulating processing fluency had an impact on classification decisions in an artificial grammar learning task (E...
متن کاملRunning head: Fluency does not express implicit knowledge FLUENCY DOES NOT EXPRESS IMPLICIT KNOWLEDGE OF ARTIFICIAL GRAMMARS
It is commonly held that implicit knowledge expresses itself as fluency. A perceptual clarification task was used to examine the relationship between perceptual processing fluency, subjective familiarity, and grammaticality judgments in a task frequently used to produce implicit knowledge, artificial grammar learning (AGL). Four experiments examined the effects of naturally occurring difference...
متن کاملIntact implicit learning in schizophrenia.
OBJECTIVE Schizophrenia impairs performance on explicit, but not implicit, memory tasks, indicating that conscious awareness at retrieval is a critical determinant of impaired memory. The authors investigated implicit learning, i.e., knowledge acquisition in the absence of conscious awareness, in patients with schizophrenia. METHOD An artificial grammar learning task was used to assess implic...
متن کاملThe architecture of intuition: Fluency and affect determine intuitive judgments of semantic and visual coherence and judgments of grammaticality in artificial grammar learning.
People can intuitively detect whether a word triad has a common remote associate (coherent) or does not have one (incoherent) before and independently of actually retrieving the common associate. The authors argue that semantic coherence increases the processing fluency for coherent triads and that this increased fluency triggers a brief and subtle positive affect, which is the experiential bas...
